How I got into Collage
Creating collage as an art form was an easy step from the work I had been doing for many years as a conservator of paper. The same techniques of pasting up were easily transferable. I was first stimulated by the visual texture the gothic print on pages from a cast off nineteenth century German encyclopedia. I would stain the pages, then tear or cut, move them around and paste in layers. It was a liberating and enlightening experience after the rigors of conservation. Then I went on to japan paper, brown shopping bags and gray packing paper, again staining with ink or coloring with acrylic paint and sometimes pasting on to a canvas backing. Now I am using photographs and film strips. Making collage is an enjoyable process.
